0.3m illegal Afghan refugees voluntarily left Pakistan: Minister

Islamabad: Caretaker Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti announced a decisive move to repatriate all Afghan refugees residing illegally in Pakistan. Addressing the media, Minister Bugti disclosed that the decision was part of a broader effort to establish a normalized state, with the prime minister emphasizing the dignified repatriation of illegal refugees.

The minister stressed the importance of a systematic mechanism for the repatriation process, cautioning that any mishandling of the situation would be met with necessary actions. He clarified that the decision was not made overnight but is a well-thought-out policy. Minister Bugti highlighted that voluntary returns were encouraged, resulting in the voluntary departure of 300,000 illegal Afghan residents so far.

Providing details on the government’s role, Bugti mentioned the facilitation of the return of 8,000 individuals, with 80% of the 569 received complaints addressed through a dedicated government-level mechanism.

Emphasizing the need to avoid mistreatment of migrants with valid identity cards, the minister clarified, “Those with identity cards should not face harassment. The impression that action is being taken against Afghan immigrants is incorrect.”

Minister Bugti assured that the repatriation process is underway with a focus on dignified returns, ensuring that all possible facilities are provided to those returning. He noted that suggestions regarding the return of foreigners are being seriously considered, reinforcing the government’s commitment to addressing the issue comprehensively.
