75 Pakistanis Evacuated to Rwanda from Conflict-Hit Goma: FO

Following the recent escalation of violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), around 150 Pakistanis were left stranded in the conflict-ridden city of Goma, the Foreign Office confirmed on Thursday.

According to Foreign Office (FO) Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan, Pakistan’s high commissioner in Kigali successfully engaged with Rwandan authorities, securing permission for the stranded individuals to cross into Rwanda. “So far, around 75 Pakistanis have moved to Rwanda,” he stated.

The crisis intensified as M23 rebels captured Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, earlier this week. The group, advancing southward, is attempting to expand its control, with reports indicating movement towards Bukavu’s airport in Kavumu.

Pakistan’s diplomatic mission in Kigali has arranged food and accommodation for affected citizens and continues to reach out to others in distress. “There is a likelihood of more Pakistanis crossing over to Rwanda in the coming days,” Khan added, confirming that the high commission remains in contact with all those seeking assistance. Efforts are also underway to support Pakistani nationals in Bukavu, a border city near the conflict zone.

The capture of Goma marks a significant escalation in the region’s long-standing conflict. M23 rebels claim they will continue their advance toward Kinshasa, demanding resolutions to their grievances. Meanwhile, Rwanda has defended its involvement, stating its aim is to combat militant groups linked to the 1994 genocide, though it faces accusations of exploiting the region’s mineral resources.

As the conflict rages on, humanitarian conditions deteriorate. An AFP report estimates over 100 people killed and nearly 1,000 wounded in recent clashes. Goma residents, reeling from the violence, cautiously emerged on Thursday to assess the damage.
