PM Shehbaz Calls High-Level Meeting Amid AJK Protests

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a high-level meeting on Monday to address AJK Protests and the ongoing situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) following failed negotiations between protesters and the state government.

Expressing deep concern over violent clashes between AJK police and protesters, PM Shehbaz emphasized zero tolerance for lawlessness. He stressed the importance of peaceful dialogue, condemning any damage to government property.

The AJK Protests, organized by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) against high electricity bills and taxes, escalated into clashes prompting the deployment of Rangers. PM Shehbaz urged parties to seek peaceful resolutions despite attempts to politicize the situation.

Sadly, a police officer was killed and over 70 injured in Mirpur during the unrest. JAAC’s central leadership distanced itself from violence, emphasizing the movement’s peaceful nature.

Negotiations between JAAC and the AJK government reached an impasse, prompting considerations to suspend mobile and internet services for two days. Schools and offices in AJK will remain closed on Monday.

JAAC members reaffirmed their peaceful stance, disavowing any involvement in violent incidents. They clarified their protests aimed at addressing legitimate grievances without hostility towards state institutions.

The protesters’ demands, they asserted, are reasonable and open to resolution through dialogue. They emphasized their commitment to non-destructive means, highlighting their ownership of the institutions and properties affected.
