In observance of Ashura, the federal government has announced public Holidays on July 16th and 17th, 2024 (Tuesday and Wednesday). This decision was confirmed by a notification issued by the Cabinet Division, citing the significance of Muharram 9 and 10 in the Islamic calendar (1446 AH).
Muslims worldwide commemorate Ashura with solemnity and reflection, marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions at the Battle of Karbala. The occasion is observed with prayers, processions, and acts of charity.
To ensure the safety and security of citizens during this period, the government has authorized the deployment of the Pakistan Army and Civil Armed Forces (CAF) across the nation. This precautionary measure, enforced for an indefinite period, aims to maintain peace and order during Muharram gatherings and processions.

According to the Ministry of Interior, discussions are ongoing with provincial authorities, including the governments of Gilgit Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Islamabad, to finalize the deployment details. The date for the conclusion of this security arrangement will be determined following mutual consultation among all stakeholders.

Amid concerns over the spread of provocative content on social media platforms, provincial governments have requested the federal government to temporarily suspend these services for a week. However, as of now, the federal government has not made a decision on this matter and asserts that any action will be taken in consultation with the provinces, prioritizing national security and public safety.
