Islamabad:In a significant milestone for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese Premier Li Qiang virtually inaugurated the Gwadar International Airport today. The inauguration, held at the Prime Minister House in Islamabad, coincides with Premier Li’s four-day official visit ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.
The newly constructed Gwadar International Airport is a cornerstone of CPEC’s infrastructure development and is set to transform Gwadar’s economy, promoting regional connectivity. Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Shehbaz praised the project as a symbol of the “time-tested friendship” between Pakistan and China.
“This landmark achievement reflects the deep bond between our nations. Gwadar International Airport will boost Gwadar’s economic prospects and contribute to Pakistan’s overall economic growth,” stated Prime Minister Shehbaz, thanking China for the generous gift.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang echoed these sentiments, congratulating the Pakistani people and government. “The inauguration of Gwadar International Airport marks a critical step in advancing regional connectivity and underscores the strength of Pak-China friendship,” Premier Li remarked. He emphasized CPEC’s role in Pakistan’s economic development and reaffirmed China’s commitment to mutual prosperity through high-quality infrastructure projects under the Belt and Road Initiative.
13 MoUs Signed to Boost Bilateral Cooperation
During the visit, Pakistan and China signed 13 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance cooperation across various sectors, including security, education, agriculture, and technology. Both leaders highlighted the significance of these agreements in strengthening the longstanding partnership between the two nations.
Key agreements include the promotion of cooperation in science and technology, water management, human resources, and the joint production of television programs. Notably, a Protocol on Quarantine Requirements for the export of donkey meat to China was also signed, reflecting expanding trade ties.
As both countries continue to deepen their collaboration under CPEC, Prime Minister Shehbaz assured China of Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to the success of the initiative’s second phase, further strengthening peace, security, and economic integration in the region.
A Symbol of Strong Ties
Premier Li hailed the Pak-China relationship as “special” and “unbreakable,” reaffirming that the partnership had stood firm despite global challenges. He pledged to work closely with Pakistan to accelerate economic development and mutual benefit in the future.
The completion of Gwadar International Airport is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing regional trade and boosting port activities in Gwadar, making it a vital hub for connectivity and economic growth across South Asia and beyond.
