In a landmark event at Aiwan-e-Sadr, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif jointly conferred the rank and baton of Field Marshal upon Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Syed Asim Munir on Thursday, marking a moment of profound national pride and military distinction.
The special investiture ceremony, attended by senior civil and military leadership, was held to recognize Field Marshal Munir’s exceptional leadership during Pakistan’s recent military confrontation with India and the successful execution of “Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos.”
The rank of Field Marshal — a five-star designation and the highest attainable in the Pakistan Army — was approved earlier this week during a federal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The cabinet cited Munir’s strategic brilliance, operational command, and unwavering resolve in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty as key reasons for the elevation.

Addressing the ceremony, President Zardari said it was an honour to celebrate the defenders of Pakistan’s territorial integrity, particularly during a period marked by unprovoked Indian aggression.
“I, as President of Pakistan, hereby promote General Syed Asim Munir to the full rank of Field Marshal and confer upon him the baton of field marshal” President Zardari declared, commending the armed forces for their unity, courage, and decisive response.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed these sentiments, calling the occasion one of historic importance. “Our armed forces not only defended our soil but carried the battle into enemy territory, compelling the aggressor to retreat in humiliation,” he said.
He extended special appreciation to Field Marshal Munir, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf for their unified leadership.
