Syrian president meets King Charles, holds talks with UK premier

Leaders discuss Middle East tensions, economic concerns and bilateral cooperation

LONDON: Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa met King Charles III at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, where the monarch expressed support for Syria and its people, stressing the importance of national rebuilding and enhanced cooperation between the two countries.

During his visit to the United Kingdom, President Al-Sharaa also held talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Discussions focused on the evolving situation in the Middle East, with both sides emphasising the need to prevent further escalation and work towards restoring regional stability.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz also featured prominently in the talks, amid growing global economic uncertainty linked to disruptions in energy supply routes.

Prime Minister Starmer outlined plans to strengthen cooperation on migration, including strategies to manage the return of individuals without legal status in the UK.

Both sides agreed to maintain close communication and continue diplomatic engagement moving forward.

The meeting at Buckingham Palace came amid reports that King Charles had raised concerns over the appointment of Peter Mandelson as Britain’s ambassador to the United States, with the monarch reportedly questioning the decision during the approval process.
