Aid flotilla sets sail from Barcelona to challenge Gaza blockade

Activists launch “Global Sumud Flotilla” with medical supplies as Israel maintains restrictions on access to Gaza

BARCELONA: A second humanitarian flotilla carrying aid for Palestinians in Gaza Strip was set to depart Sunday from Barcelona in a renewed attempt to challenge Israel’s blockade of the enclave.

Organisers said around 30 boats, loaded with medical supplies and essential goods, would leave the Mediterranean port under the banner of the “Global Sumud Flotilla,” with additional vessels expected to join along the route.

The move follows a similar attempt last October, when the Israeli military intercepted nearly 40 boats trying to reach Gaza, detaining more than 450 participants, including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.

Israel, which controls access to Gaza, has denied accusations that it is restricting humanitarian supplies to the territory’s population of over two million people. However, Palestinians and international aid organisations say the assistance reaching the area remains insufficient, even after a ceasefire agreement that included provisions for increased aid.

The flotilla aims to pressure for greater access and highlight what organisers describe as a humanitarian crisis. Saif Abukeshak, a Palestinian activist involved in the initiative, said the mission seeks to open a “humanitarian corridor” to allow aid organisations to deliver supplies more effectively.

Supporting voices include Liam Cunningham, known for his role in Game of Thrones, who criticised governments for failing to meet their obligations. He said the presence of aid ships reflected a broader failure to ensure timely humanitarian assistance.

The World Health Organization has also stressed that international humanitarian law requires safe access to medical care even during armed conflict.

Meanwhile, activists involved in previous flotillas have alleged mistreatment during detention by Israeli authorities — claims rejected by Israeli officials.

As the flotilla heads towards Gaza, the mission is expected to test both the limits of the blockade and the international community’s response to ongoing humanitarian concerns in the region.
