Iranian president holds talks with PM Shehbaz after ceremonial welcome

ISLAMABAD: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday arrived at the Prime Minister’s House, where he was received by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as the two countries began formal talks aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation.

The two leaders exchanged warm greetings before President Pezeshkian was presented with a guard of honour by a contingent of the armed forces. The national anthems of Pakistan and Iran were played during the welcoming ceremony.

President Pezeshkian, accompanied by a high-level political and economic delegation, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, is scheduled to hold one-on-one talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, followed by delegation-level discussions.

The talks are expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in trade, energy, regional connectivity and security, while also reviewing the overall state of bilateral relations.

Following his engagements at the Prime Minister’s House, the Iranian president proceeded to the Aiwan-e-Sadr, where he was formally received by President Asif Ali Zardari for further high-level discussions.

During his visit, President Pezeshkian is also scheduled to receive an honorary fellowship from the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan in recognition of his contributions.

Earlier in the day, the Iranian president arrived at Nur Khan Airbase on a one-day state visit and was accorded a ceremonial welcome. He was received by President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and senior civil and military officials.

The visit marks President Pezeshkian’s second official trip to Pakistan since assuming office and is aimed at further strengthening diplomatic, economic and strategic ties between the two neighbouring countries.
