Qatari emir congratulates PM Shehbaz on US-Iran peace breakthrough

Leaders discuss Islamabad MoU, regional stability and strengthening bilateral cooperation during phone call

ISLAMABAD: Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Wednesday telephoned Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to congratulate him on Pakistan’s successful mediation of the preliminary peace agreement between the United States and Iran.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the Qatari emir praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership and expressed Qatar’s full support for Pakistan’s efforts to promote regional peace and stability.

The diplomatic understanding, known as the Islamabad memorandum of understanding, was presented before Parliament on Wednesday after six rounds of confidential negotiations facilitated by Pakistan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz thanked the Qatari leadership for its continued support and said the diplomatic progress was made possible through the efforts of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, as well as the constructive role played by friendly countries, including Qatar.

The two leaders expressed satisfaction over the successful conclusion of the first round of technical-level talks between the United States and Iran held in Bürgenstock, Switzerland.

They stressed the importance of maintaining positive momentum during the agreed 60-day negotiation period and agreed that the peace process should be protected from any external attempts to undermine it.

During the conversation, the Qatari emir also expressed condolences over the death of a Pakistani national in a fire at the Barzan gas facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City.

Prime Minister Shehbaz thanked the emir for his sympathies and appreciated Qatar for hosting more than 300,000 Pakistani expatriates.

Recalling his official visit to Doha earlier this year, the prime minister renewed his invitation to the Qatari emir to visit Pakistan.

Sheikh Tamim expressed his intention to visit Islamabad later this year to discuss expanding bilateral economic cooperation and exchanging views on regional security developments.
