WEB DESK: Pakistani mountaineer and trail runner Anum Uzair has created history by becoming the first athlete to win Pakistan’s inaugural 100-kilometre Galiyat Mountain Trail Ultra Marathon, conquering one of the country’s toughest endurance races through rugged mountains, dense forests and challenging terrain.
The ultra-marathon tested competitors with steep trails, unpredictable weather and the constant risk of encountering wildlife. Despite the demanding conditions, Anum completed the race with determination, showcasing exceptional endurance and resilience.
Speaking to Geo News, Anum dedicated her historic achievement to the women of Pakistan, especially aspiring female runners, and pledged to continue representing the country on the international stage by taking on even greater endurance challenges.
Reflecting on the race, she acknowledged the risks involved.
“I knew this wouldn’t be an easy challenge,” she said.
“There was a risk of lightning, and it was just like the risk of snowstorms in mountaineering.”
She added that wildlife posed another major concern throughout the event.
“Whether it was mountaineering or trail running, there were risks,” she said.
Recalling one of her training sessions, Anum revealed that she once encountered a leopard while preparing for a 40-kilometre run.
“During my practice run, I saw a leopard sitting about 200 feet ahead on the track,” she said.
She explained that the experience helped her overcome fear and strengthened her mental resolve.
“Once the fear was gone from my mind, I focused only on my goal, and I achieved it.”
Comparing mountaineering and trail running, Anum said both sports present unique challenges.
“The challenges of mountaineering are different from those of trail running. The dangers in one are not the same as in the other,” she said.
She noted that trail running requires less time away from home, allowing her to balance her passion for adventure with her responsibilities as a mother.
“Spending three days on such an event is manageable,” she added.
Highlighting the importance of preparation, Anum said maintaining fitness throughout the year has been central to her success.
“I work on my fitness throughout the year. I can climb stairs up to 100 floors as part of my routine to stay in shape. I always keep myself ready before taking on a challenge,” she said.
