Dear Prime Minister,
First of all, let me apologise if you find my suggestions derogatory but I feel sorry for the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and the Government of AJK, who are still being deprived of the basic necessities of life.
Although I am not trying to put the blame on any particular government, all of them did very little to nothing to overcome this potential problem.
According to a 2011 USAID report, AJK’s total electricity consumption is not more than 400MW. If this is true, then I am unable to comprehend why Azad Jammu and Kashmir is dependent solely on WAPDA to meet this demand.
I can understand that we need WAPDA for transmission but for generation and distribution, we can develop our own systems.
I have seen many electrical distribution lines in North America and other developed countries and I think that we are fortunate enough to have the same infrastructure but we need to overcome distribution losses and power theft.
To implement this and to have a proper load management, we need an efficient and fully functional AJK electricity department.
The AJK government should start working on small hydro run-of-the-river projects to minimise its dependence on national grid as we already have distribution infrastructure to carry power to the customers with little maintenance.
Hydro is the cheapest source of electricity and we can take advantage of our abundant water resources.
Lastly, AJK has huge potential for solar power as well. Your government can also provide subsidy to people and encourage them to use this renewable energy source. It will bring positive effect on climate change as well.
I wish you all the best for the challenges which are ahead and may the force be with you.
