AJK Witnesses Massive Strikes and Protests Over Rising Utility Prices

Muzaffarabad: Azad Jammu and Kashmir recently experienced a complete shutter down strike and widespread mass protests in various cities, all aimed at addressing the alarming increase in electricity and flour prices.

The shutter down strike commenced on Thursday morning and saw rallies organized in numerous cities across the region. During these demonstrations, protesters voiced their grievances against the government, demanding urgent solutions to the escalating cost of essential utilities.

This strike was called by the Joint Public Action Committee of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, which has been at the forefront of ongoing protests against rising prices in the region for several months.

Notably, just last week, law enforcement authorities dismantled protest camps in cities like Rawalakot and Muzaffarabad, taking many protesters into custody. In response, all regional action committees united to form the Joint Public Action Committee, galvanizing support and solidarity among the protesters.

Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq, while acknowledging the people’s right to protest, emphasized that no one would be allowed to take the law into their own hands during these demonstrations.

Meanwhile, following raids on the homes of leaders associated with the Joint Public Action Committee, a significant backlash erupted on social media. It’s important to note that leaders from various political parties in Azad Jammu and Kashmir are not part of this particular protest movement.

Faisal Jameel, the leader of the Joint Public Action Committee in Muzaffarabad, stated, “Public sentiment is clearly visible. People voluntarily chose to keep their cars off the roads and shops closed, participating in this protest of their own free will.”

In Muzaffarabad’s main square, a substantial number of protesters gathered, and Shaukat Nawaz Mir, the head of the Joint Action Committee, who had been in hiding following the raids, joined the protest.

During the protests, participants chanted slogans not only against the government but also against the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) and the construction of a dam in Muzaffarabad.

This marks a significant moment as the region of Azad Jammu and Kashmir witnesses widespread protests and demonstrations, reflecting the mounting public concern over rising utility prices and the collective demand for immediate action.
