Balochistan Declares Emergency as Heavy Rains Ravage Province

The Balochistan government has announced a state of emergency following relentless heavy rains that have wreaked havoc across various districts, resulting in casualties and injuries.

Areas severely impacted by the downpour include Kohlu, Musa Khel, Zhob, Sherani, Mastung, and Nushki. Additionally, Chaman, Qila Abdullah, Pishin, Ziarat, and others experienced hailstorms accompanied by strong winds, causing damage to trees, gardens, and solar panels.

The inclement weather has disrupted land connectivity, particularly affecting rural areas like Sinjawi, Pishin, Toba Kakari, and Qila Abdullah, leading to significant communication challenges for residents.

In Pasni’s ward no 5, a house collapse due to rain left six people injured, including four children, while in Karkh, a 13-year-old girl lost her life under similar circumstances, with three others sustaining injuries.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted further Heavy Rains in Balochistan throughout the week. According to PMD, westerly winds are expected to enter western Balochistan on April 16 and spread to other regions by April 18.

The department warned of potential flooding in strong water drains from April 17 to 18 due to the anticipated rainfall in areas such as Gwadar, Naseerabad, Sibi, Kohlu, Harnaya, Mastung, and Barkhan.

Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind confirmed seven fatalities due to the rains and announced the closure of schools for two days. Additionally, all relevant officers and staff have been called in to address the situation.

Efforts by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) are underway, with Balochistan Assembly member Wali Muhammad noting ongoing work in affected areas. Authorities are also taking action against encroachments on drains to mitigate future risks.
