Britain, Canada, Australia recognise state of Palestine

Britain, Canada, and Australia formally recognised the State of Palestine on Sunday, joining more than 140 countries that back Palestinian aspirations for an independent homeland. The landmark decision, driven by frustration over the ongoing Gaza war, is intended to revive momentum for a two-state solution but has drawn sharp criticism from Israel and is expected to strain ties with Washington.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the recognition was meant to “revive the hope of peace for Palestinians and Israelis.” Canadian PM Mark Carney and Australian PM Anthony Albanese made similar statements, stressing the need for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages.

Palestinian officials welcomed the recognition as “long overdue,” calling it a step toward justice and sovereignty, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has maintained there will “never be a Palestinian state.”

The move also reflects growing pressure on Western governments amid mounting civilian casualties in Gaza, where calls for immediate humanitarian action and a lasting peace process continue to intensify.
