ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday declared that Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain will remain the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q).
In July last year, the PML-Q central working committee removed Chaudhry Shujaat as the party president and Tariq Bashir Cheema as general secretary and announced intra-party elections.
Chaudhry Shujaat then filed a plea before the ECP against these decisions. The ECP had reserved its verdict in the case on August 18, 2022.
Besides giving the verdict in Chaudhry Shujaat’s favour, the ECP also declared the decisions taken in the PML-Q central working committee, headed by Senator Kamil Ali Agha, null and void.
The ouster of Chaudhry Shujaat as the party president was orchestrated by Pervaiz Elahi.
There has been a power struggle in the PML-Q ranks between Chaudhry Shujaat and Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi’s groups over the joining hands with PTI and PML-N.
Pervaiz Elahi, his son Moonis and most of the party leaders sided with the PTI while Chaudhry Shujaat, Salik Hussain and Tariq Bashir Cheema supported the PMLN.
