CM Murad waives first e-challan, warns repeat offenders of strict action

Sindh launches digital traffic fine system; over 12,000 e-challans issued in three days

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has directed traffic police to show leniency by waiving the first e-challan issued to motorists but warned that repeat offenders will face strict action.

Chairing a meeting on e-challan implementation, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon briefed the chief minister that the new digital ticketing system had gone live this week and was already showing results.

The IGP informed that around 35 vehicles with government number plates had received challans, while thousands of others were fined for violations including not wearing seatbelts, using mobile phones while driving, tinted glasses, and jumping red lights.

The system was initiated on October 28 when an e-ticket was issued to a police van (SPE-950) for not wearing a seatbelt.

Shah said the e-ticketing initiative ensures equal enforcement of traffic laws and eliminates human discretion. He directed the police to cancel first-time fines if the violator contacts authorities within 10 days.

Traffic officials reported that 12,942 e-challans have been issued within three days of the launch — 2,622 on the first day, 4,301 on the second, and 5,979 on the third.

Officials said the new e-challan system aims to improve traffic discipline through automation and transparency.
