Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has recommended the government to enact a formal legislation for postponing local body elections.
The Election Commission, in its letter, recommended the government to amend Article 219 and Article 140A of the Election Act 2019, saying that if the amendment of the law is necessary, it should be done before the completion of the term of the local governments.
The proposed constitutional amendment said that the law should be amended in such a way that municipal elections can be held within four months after the expiry of the term.
Besides, the sources of the Election Commission said that after the change in the Election Act, all the preparations of the Election Commission are lost. According to the sources, the letter said that whatever legislation should be made, it should be done before the term of the local governments ends.
According to the Election Commission sources, the Election Commission is obliged to implement the Local Government Elections Act under the Constitution.
