Islamabad: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has categorically rejected the government’s draft for the proposed constitutional amendment, calling it “unacceptable in any form.” Speaking informally to the media on Wednesday after arriving at the residence of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Qaiser, Maulana Fazlur Rehman questioned the origins and intentions behind the draft.
“The treasury members are now also saying the draft was not theirs either,” he stated. “What kind of game was played here?” he asked, hinting at a lack of transparency and involvement from the government itself.
Opposition’s Concerns Over the Draft
Maulana Fazlur Rehman emphasized that supporting the draft would be a “significant betrayal of the nation.” He reiterated that his party had reviewed the proposed constitutional amendments and found them entirely unacceptable, adding, “Now even the government is distancing itself from the draft. What was this game?”
PTI leader and former president Arif Alvi, along with PTI spokesperson Raoof Hassan, also attended the luncheon hosted by Asad Qaiser, where the matter was discussed.

Call for Consensus and Consultation
During the meeting, Asad Qaiser expressed concern over the government’s approach to the proposed amendments, particularly the lack of consultation with opposition parties. He criticized the government for attempting to amend 56 articles of the Constitution without seeking input from political stakeholders.
Qaiser stressed that any constitutional amendments should be carried out transparently and with the consensus of all parties. “The opposition has resolved to handle all matters through consultation,” he stated, reaffirming the opposition’s commitment to a collaborative approach on such critical issues.
He concluded by saying that JUI-F, along with other opposition parties, would not support any legislation passed without proper consultation, calling for a more transparent legislative process moving forward.
