In a historic move, the federal cabinet on Tuesday approved the promotion of Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal, the highest military rank in Pakistan. The decision follows Pakistan’s successful defense against unprovoked Indian aggression earlier this month.
The cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, also announced the extension of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu’s tenure, allowing him to continue serving beyond his scheduled retirement.
The development marks General Asim Munir as only the second individual in Pakistan’s history to attain the prestigious rank of Field Marshal — the first being Ayub Khan, who also served as President of Pakistan.
National Tribute to Operation “Bunyanum Marsoos” Heroes
The cabinet further decided to confer national honors on the martyrs and ghazis, including civilians, of Operation Bunyanum Marsoos. These awards will recognize their critical role in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty during the recent conflict.

‘This Is Not an Individual Honour’: Field Marshal Munir
In his first public statement after the announcement, Field Marshal Asim Munir dedicated the honor to the entire nation and its defenders.
“I dedicate this honour to the entire nation, the Pakistan Armed Forces, and especially to the civilian and military martyrs and veterans,” he said.
“This is not an individual honour, but one for the Armed Forces and the entire nation. I am thankful for the trust of the President, the Prime Minister, and the Cabinet. This is a national trust, and millions like Asim are ready to lay down their lives to uphold it.”
Exemplary Leadership Amid Crisis
Prior to the cabinet’s decision, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met President Asif Ali Zardari to discuss the promotion. During the meeting, the premier emphasized the Army Chief’s critical leadership during the crisis with India, which unfolded between the night of May 6 and 7.
According to the cabinet, India launched an unprovoked and unjustified military action targeting civilians — including women and children — in what was described as a direct threat to Pakistan’s sovereignty.
In response, General Asim Munir led the armed forces in a “historic and thumping victory,” showcasing strategic brilliance and unshakable resolve. The federal ministers praised his “exemplary leadership and dedication” in orchestrating Pakistan’s military response.
What is a Field Marshal?
The rank of Field Marshal is a five-star designation and represents the pinnacle of military hierarchy. It is typically awarded in recognition of extraordinary leadership and national service. While largely honorary, it stands as a powerful symbol of distinguished command and exceptional merit.
