Govt Moves to Ban PTI, file treason references against Imran Khan, Arif Alvi

The federal government has escalated its actions against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) by deciding to ban the former ruling party and file treason references against PTI founder Imran Khan and former president Arif Alvi under Article 6 of the Constitution.

During a press conference in Islamabad, Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazir Tarar announced the federal government’s intention to petition the Supreme Court to ban PTI. “PTI and Pakistan cannot co-exist,” Tarar stated, attributing the decision to the party’s involvement in the May 9 incidents and attempts by PTI leaders to undermine Pakistan’s agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

This development follows the indictment of PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi in cases related to the May 9 riots and Imran Khan’s arrest in connection to the events of that day.

Tarar also revealed that the government plans to move a reference against then-prime minister Imran Khan, then-president Arif Alvi, and then National Assembly deputy speaker Qasim Suri for their actions during the no-confidence motion that led to the dissolution of assemblies. This reference, under Article 6, will be presented to the Supreme Court after cabinet approval.

Criticizing the PTI, Tarar emphasized the party’s perceived immunity despite the involvement of its leaders in various legal cases. “He [Khan] was the worst fascist leader. He inherited the pattern of putting mothers and sisters to jail,” the PML-N leader remarked.

Addressing the government’s stance on reconciliation with PTI, Tarar declared an end to their tolerance, stating, “No more. Enough is enough. They have played with the country’s fate too much.”

Tarar argued that Pakistan’s progress, economic prosperity, and opportunities for its youth are incompatible with PTI’s continued existence. He also commented on the Supreme Court’s decision favoring PTI’s eligibility for reserved seats, highlighting the legal loopholes in the judgment and announcing plans to file a review petition.

The minister asserted that the review petition is justified, noting the injustices faced by women and minorities and the need for clarity on the eligibility and representation issues within the Election Act 2017.
