Greek Boat Tragedy: PM orders action against human trafficking

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to take strict measures against human trafficking following the Greek boat tragedy that claimed the lives of five Pakistani nationals.

Chairing a meeting on the issue, the prime minister expressed concern over the loss of lives and called for decisive action against those involved in trafficking. He also requested a report on human smuggling incidents involving Pakistanis over the past year.

The tragedy involved three boats that capsized near Greece, carrying over 80 Pakistanis. Five fatalities have been confirmed, while 39 people, including 35 Pakistanis, remain missing.

Rescued individuals are currently housed in a refugee camp near Athens, and a Sudanese driver suspected of involvement has been detained.

The Foreign Office and Pakistan’s embassy in Greece are assisting affected families.

The prime minister emphasized the need for stricter border management systems, better international collaboration, and public awareness campaigns to prevent such incidents in the future.

Investigations are underway, and nationwide operations against human smuggling networks have been launched.
