Gujranwala: In a harrowing incident, a woman and her teenage son have been arrested for allegedly murdering her husband, Tariq, in Gujranwala after discovering his second marriage. The arrest followed a complaint filed by Tariq’s second wife, prompting a swift police investigation.
According to police reports, Tariq’s remarriage six months ago enraged his first wife and son, leading to the tragic confrontation. The accused allegedly tortured Tariq, tying him with a rope and applying red chilli powder to his eyes before strangling him to death.
Following the murder, the mother-son duo reportedly stormed into the residence of Tariq’s second wife, which led to the police being alerted and their subsequent arrest. Police recovered Tariq’s body, and the accused have reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation.
While polygamy is legally permitted in Pakistan, it is not a widespread practice. Research by the Institute of Policy Studies, an Islamabad-based think tank, indicates that polygamy is more common in rural areas, particularly in families without a male heir or when men develop romantic relationships outside their first marriage. In urban areas, such cases are rare.

This case comes on the heels of another disturbing incident earlier this month in Karachi, where a woman named Asma was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her husband, Shah Zaman. Asma, with the help of her paramour Ghulam Nabi, strangled and electrocuted Zaman. The court noted that Asma confessed to the crime and had meticulously planned the murder.
