Iran’s Top Security Official Meets Omani Sultan Amid US-Iran Talks

Muscat: Iran’s top security official, Ali Larijani, met Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman on Tuesday to discuss developments in the resumed Iranian-American negotiations, days after the first round of talks between officials from Washington and Tehran last Friday.

According to the Oman News Agency, Larijani also met Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, who mediated the indirect US-Iran talks, exploring ways to achieve a balanced and just agreement and emphasizing the importance of returning to dialogue.

During his visit, Larijani held talks with Mohammad Abdulsalam, spokesperson for Yemen’s Tehran-backed Houthi rebels. He is scheduled to travel to Qatar next, the Iranian foreign ministry confirmed.

The meetings come after Iran and the United States resumed indirect negotiations in Oman, marking the first diplomatic engagement since the 12-day Iran-Israel war last June.

Meanwhile, Iran warned against external interference in the talks ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington, calling such influence “destructive” to the diplomatic process.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baqaei said, “Our negotiating party is America. It is up to America to act independently of pressures detrimental to the region.” He also accused Israel of opposing any diplomatic process in the region that could lead to peace.
