IWPG Global Region 2 participates in 68th UN CSW

NEW YORK: The Global Region 2 of International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG), led by Regional Director Seo-yeon Lee, attended the 68th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at the UN Headquarters in New York.

On the 13th of last month, a meeting was held at the UN East Lounge with Enaam Barashi, Secretary-General of the Jordan River Foundation, and Aghadir Jwaihan, Secretary-General of the Princess Tagreed Institute Development & Training, to discuss peace initiatives.

CSW, a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), convenes annually in March to bring together governments of various countries and related international and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to share policy practices for enhancing women’s empowerment and advancing their rights, as well as to explore effective approaches to gender equality policy implementation.

This 68th session focused on ‘Accelerating the Achievement of Gender Equality and the Empowerment of All Women and Girls by Addressing Poverty and Strengthening Institutions and Financing with a Gender Perspective’.

The Jordan River Foundation (JRF) was founded by Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan in 1995. The foundation operates as an independent non-profit organisation dedicated to improving the livelihoods of families and children in Jordan through various social and economic development programs.

The Princess Taghrid Institute for Development and Training (PTIDT) is indeed chaired by Princess Taghrid of Jordan. The institute is known for its work in various areas such as education, training, and development initiatives, particularly focused on empowering women and promoting socio-economic progress in Jordan. Princess Taghrid of Jordan plays a significant role in leading and supporting the institute’s efforts to make positive contributions to the country and its communities.

Both organisations are prestigious within Jordan due to their significant contributions and reputable status in the country.

During the meeting, discussions were held on the introduction of IWPG, its vision, and the importance of peace activities based on the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW). The upcoming ‘2024 International Women’s Peace Conference’, scheduled for September, was also introduced.

The two representatives met through an introduction by Jordan’s Minister of Social Development, Wafa Bani Mustafa, and pledged to cooperate on mutual women’s peace activities through ongoing communication.

They were impressed by the diverse peace activities of IWPG members in Jordan and agreed to share materials and convey them to the Jordanian government.

Regional Director of Global Region 2 Lee Seo-yeon expressed admiration for Queen Rania Al Abdullah’s passion for peace, emphasising the need for continued government interest and support for IWPG’s women’s peace activities.

IWPG is a global women’s NGO registered with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the Department of Global Communications (DGC). Based in Seoul, South Korea, it actively engages in activities such as women’s peace networks, women’s peace education, peace culture propagation project, and advocacy for the enactment of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW), collaborating with over 110 branches worldwide and 660 affiliated organisations.
