Karachi: In a concerning revelation, Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, has claimed the unfortunate distinction of being ranked first among the top ten most polluted cities globally, according to the Air Quality Index (AQI). This alarming data has sparked widespread concern among health experts and the public alike.
The average Air Quality Index reading in Karachi has soared to 220, marking a distressing level of air pollution. Meanwhile, Lahore, another major city in Pakistan, found itself ranked third on this disconcerting list. To put this into perspective, an AQI reading as high as 151-200 is considered unhealthy, while an AQI ranging from 201 to 300 is even more harmful. An AQI rate exceeding 300 marks a state of extreme hazardous pollution.
The AQI calculation takes into account five key categories of pollution: ground-level ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide.
Health Experts Sound the Alarm on Public Health Risks
Health experts have sounded the alarm, emphasizing the critical need for immediate action to address this alarming rise in pollution levels. They warn that such elevated levels of pollution can have severe and detrimental effects on public health. Individuals with preexisting conditions such as eye discomfort, allergies, and respiratory issues are at an even higher risk of suffering adverse health effects due to this pollution crisis.
Practical Measures to Combat Pollution
To mitigate the risks posed by the polluted air, health experts offer practical advice that can be adopted by the public:
- Use of Helmets: For those commuting on motorcycles, wearing a helmet is strongly recommended. Helmets not only provide protection in accidents but also help reduce exposure to harmful pollutants, safeguarding the respiratory system.
- Regular Eye Washing: Given the high levels of air pollution, regularly washing one’s eyes can be a simple yet effective measure to protect against eye irritation and discomfort caused by pollutants.
- Keep Windows Closed: To minimize exposure to outdoor pollutants, it is essential to keep the windows of houses closed, particularly during times of peak pollution.
The situation calls for immediate attention from authorities, environmental organizations, and the public to address the growing menace of air pollution. A collective effort is needed to improve air quality and ensure the well-being of the people of Karachi and beyond.
