Islamabad: The Election Commission has again postponed the local body elections in 7 districts of Karachi after the federal government apologized for providing security in a letter.
According to details, the decision to postpone local body elections in Karachi was taken in a meeting chaired by the Chief Election Commissioner, in which the letter written by the Ministry of Interior was reviewed. Earlier, the federal government had written a formal letter to the Election Commission on the issue of local body elections in Karachi division, in which it was excused from providing security personnel for the local body elections.
On behalf of the federal government, the Election Commission has been asked to decide the local body elections in Karachi in consultation with the Sindh government. The Sindh government is facing a shortage of 16,000 officials for the security of local body elections in Karachi division. After reviewing the letter of apology from the Ministry of Interior for providing security, the Election Commission announced the postponement of local body elections in Karachi.
Officials of the Ministry of Interior and other related institutions participated in the meeting presided over by the Chief Election Commissioner. Yesterday also in the meeting of the Election Commission, Sindh government took the position that the police and security agencies are busy in the flood-affected areas, due to which Karachi is facing a shortage of 16,000 police personnel for the municipal elections. .
The Election Commission inquired whether the Ministry of Interior can fulfill the requirement of 16 thousand security forces regarding the security of the Sindh government. The Election Commission had sought a response from the Ministry of Interior in this regard today.
Earlier, the Sindh government has also sent 3 letters to the Election Commission to postpone the local body elections for 3 months, while the local body elections in 7 districts of Karachi were scheduled on October 23.
