Mexico Detains Over 5,200 Migrants in 24 hours

Mexican authorities detained more than 5,200 migrants across the country on Tuesday, according to official statements on Wednesday. The coordinated operation involved the Army, National Guard, and state police, working alongside migration authorities to curb the flow of undocumented migrants.

The move comes as Mexico faces mounting pressure from the incoming U.S. administration to crack down on migration and drug trafficking. President-elect Donald Trump has urged Mexico to intensify efforts to block migrants and halt the movement of synthetic drugs, including fentanyl, into the U.S., threatening tariffs on Mexican goods if demands are not met.

From October 1 to December 3, Mexican authorities have detained nearly 350,000 migrants, according to data from the Navy. Many of those apprehended are believed to have arrived on foot from Central America, seeking to cross into the United States.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the issue last week, noting that a migrant caravan traveling through the southern region of the country would not be allowed to reach the northern border. She stated that migration authorities are “tending to” the needs of those remaining in the caravan.
