Military to be deployed across Pakistan for Muharram security

Islamabad: The federal government has authorized the deployment of Pakistan Army and Civil Armed Forces (CAF) across the country as part of enhanced Muharram security, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Interior.

The deployment, aimed at ensuring law and order during the holy month which commenced on Sunday, will encompass strategic coordination with provincial governments, including Gilgit Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Islamabad.

“The deployment of troops will be enforced indefinitely, with details to be finalized in collaboration with relevant authorities,” the notification affirmed. It also outlined that the duration of deployment will be determined following consultations among stakeholders.

Concerns over potential misuse of social media during Muharram have prompted requests from provincial governments, notably Punjab, for a temporary suspension of social media platforms to prevent the dissemination of inflammatory content online. However, the federal government has not yet decided on such measures.

“The decision regarding the suspension of internet services will be taken in consultation with provincial authorities,” stated a Ministry of Interior spokesperson. This stance underscores the government’s commitment to balancing security imperatives with public access to communication platforms.

Muharram security arrangements, a period of heightened religious significance, aim to facilitate peaceful observance across the nation.
