Islamabad: The National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has launched Pakistan’s first “dematerialised digital identity card,” marking a groundbreaking milestone in the nation’s identity system. The announcement was made during Nadra’s silver jubilee ceremony on Monday.
The event, held at Nadra headquarters, was graced by its founding chairman, Major General (Retd) Zahid Ihsan, as the chief guest. Other prominent attendees included Nadra Chairman Lieutenant General (Retd) Asif Munir, the special secretary of interior, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) chief statistician, the Immigration and Passport’s director-general, former chairpersons, board members, and senior officials.
The ceremony featured the unveiling of a commemorative coin by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), a special postage stamp by Pakistan Post, and a book chronicling Nadra’s 25-year journey.
In a written message, Federal Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control Mohsin Naqvi hailed the launch of Pakistan’s first dematerialised digital identity card as a major step towards digital transformation. He announced that this feature would soon be integrated into the Pak ID mobile app, enabling citizens to store their identity cards digitally on their smartphones.

Furthermore, a digital verification system will be introduced under the World Bank-backed Digital Economy Project. This system aims to provide secure and instant identity verification for various services, with the pilot phase set to launch on Independence Day 2025.
The minister also emphasised Nadra’s role in providing identity services to remote areas and overseas Pakistanis, as well as its contributions to national security by assisting law enforcement agencies.
A documentary showcasing Nadra’s achievements over the past 25 years was screened, and the commemorative book received widespread appreciation from the attendees. Speaking at the event, Major General (Retd) Zahid Ihsan reflected on Nadra’s establishment and its journey towards digital innovation. He highlighted Nadra’s continuous evolution and commitment to achieving new milestones in national identity management.
