NEPRA Approves Electricity Rate Increase for K-Electric Consumers

Islamabad– The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has granted approval for an electricity rate increase for K-Electric consumers, with the hike ranging up to Rs4.45 per unit for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2022-23.

NEPRA’s decision was made in response to the quarterly adjustment request filed by the federal government on behalf of K-Electric. The notification of this decision has been forwarded to the Ministry of Energy for final approval. The revised charges will apply to K-Electric consumers for the months of October and November 2023, and the cost will be recouped in subsequent billing cycles.

The approved increase permits a rise in electricity prices varying from Rs1.49 to Rs4.45 per unit, contingent on consumption slabs.

This move comes after the federal government’s agreement to provide a subsidy of Rs4.5 per unit to K-Electric consumers for July and August 2023. Additionally, the government directed NEPRA to authorize K-Electric to recover its fuel cost adjustment and quarterly adjustment dues from its consumer base.

Once the Ministry of Energy issues the official notification, the revised rates will be implemented for K-Electric consumers. K-Electric, a privately owned and vertically-integrated electricity company headquartered in Karachi, serves a customer base of over 3.4 million consumers.

As this rate adjustment takes effect, consumers are advised to stay informed about changes in their electricity bills and adjust their consumption accordingly. For more updates on energy-related developments, please visit our website.
