NEPRA Raises Electricity Prices by Rs1.71 Per Unit

Islamabad: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has issued a notification announcing an increase in the price of electricity by Rs1.71 per unit. This adjustment will take immediate effect and will be reflected in the electricity bills of consumers for the current month.

The decision to raise electricity prices is attributed to the monthly fuel charges adjustment, which has necessitated the increase. This move will impose an additional burden of Rs22 billion on electricity consumers.

It’s important to note that this price hike will not apply to lifeline consumers and K-electric consumers, offering some respite to these segments of the population.

Meanwhile, there are high expectations of a significant decrease in petroleum product prices in the global oil market. Reports indicate the possibility of a $7 per barrel reduction, which could translate into relief for consumers in Pakistan as well.

This decline in petroleum prices mirrors trends in the Gulf market, where crude oil prices have fallen to $92 per barrel, and the global market, where they currently stand at $84 per barrel. These developments suggest a potential reprieve from escalating fuel costs for consumers in the near future.

As consumers grapple with the immediate impact of higher electricity rates, the prospect of lower petroleum prices offers a glimmer of hope for relief in the overall cost of living and transportation expenses. The dynamic nature of energy prices underscores the need for consumers to stay informed about changes that directly affect their daily lives.
