No additional duty on solar panels: PM told Cabinet

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reassured the public that the federal government will not impose additional duties on solar panels amidst recent speculations. Addressing concerns over potential changes in solar net metering and taxation, the Prime Minister affirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring affordable energy accessibility for all citizens.

The clarification follows discussions regarding a possible shift from net metering to “gross metering” and reports hinting at new taxes on solar panels , which raised concerns about the financial viability of in-house power generation.

Prime Minister Shehbaz emphasized the government’s efforts to steer the national economy towards stability and prosperity during a federal cabinet meeting held in Islamabad. He highlighted priorities including boosting exports through support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and ensuring economic fairness by curbing privileges for the elite.

Regarding other key decisions, the Prime Minister directed expedited steps for the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), underscoring the need for transparency in the process. He also affirmed the government’s stance against any increase in sugar prices, announcing measures to monitor and regulate the market.

In addition to these economic matters, the federal cabinet approved various initiatives including the transit of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan and the extension of a committee’s mandate related to immovable property issues.

The Prime Minister concluded by instructing cabinet members to actively participate in the ongoing parliamentary debates on the upcoming budget for fiscal year 2024-25, underscoring the government’s commitment to accountable governance and economic progress.

The decisions taken during the federal cabinet meeting underscore the government’s proactive stance on economic management and policy formulation aimed at fostering sustainable growth and equitable development across Pakistan.
