WEB DESK: Federal Minister Azam Nazir Tarar said on Friday that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder and former prime minister Imran Khan is currently serving sentences in corruption cases and is receiving medical treatment for an eye condition at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
Addressing media, Tarar clarified that all legal, prison, and medical procedures related to Khan are being carried out under the supervision of the appellate tribunal, which oversees matters concerning convicted prisoners.
The minister said Imran Khan was taken to PIMS on his own request, although the treatment could have been provided inside Adiala Jail. He added that the injections administered are standard and commonly used to improve eye circulation in people above the age of 60.
“After receiving treatment, his health has improved,” Tarar said, stressing that no surgery was performed. He recalled that Information Minister Atta Tarar had also confirmed on January 29 that Khan was taken to PIMS for a medical procedure.
Explaining prison oversight, Tarar said that in police custody, matters fall under the jurisdiction of the area magistrate, while the appellate tribunal handles complaints and requests from convicted prisoners, including medical treatment and visitation.
He added that jail authorities and courts follow proper procedures to facilitate inmates, and any issues are addressed through coordination with the appellate tribunal.
The federal minister also referred to the imprisonment of Rana Sanaullah, stating that he was arrested in what he termed a baseless narcotics case and had suffered an eye stroke nine days prior to his detention.
Tarar said Sanaullah was kept in extreme heat exceeding 50 degrees Celsius and was forced to sleep on the floor, highlighting the harsh conditions inside prisons.
Concluding his remarks, Tarar maintained that Imran Khan remains in good health and is receiving medical care in line with standard procedures.
