OIC Ambassador vows to ensure Kashmir resolution under UN mandate

ISLAMABAD: Ambassador Hameed Ajibaiye Opeloyeru, Permanent Observer of the OIC Mission to the United Nations, has reiterated the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) commitment to ensuring the resolution of the Kashmir dispute in line with international law and resolutions of the United Nations.
Speaking at an event marking the fifth anniversary of India’s unilateral actions in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Opeloyeru said the OIC has adopted a plan of action to expedite the resolution of the crisis.
Opeloyeru expressed solidarity with the people of Kashmir in their struggle for self-determination, emphasising that the OIC recognises their just and legitimate struggle, the official news agency reported.
“There is no doubt that the United Nations has been seized of the question of Jammu and Kashmir since the Security Council Resolution 47 of 21 April 1948,” he added.
Accordingly, and in line with the principle of subsidiarity, the OIC, as a regional organisation of 57 member states, recognises the just and legitimate struggle of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to defend their right to self-determination, through exploring all legal, political and diplomatic avenues, leading to the realisation of the national aspirations of the people of the Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
He called on UN member states to encourage the implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions on the peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute.
Other speakers, including Ambassador Munir Akram of Pakistan, Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai and Senator Lt General (retd) Abdul Qayyum, also emphasised the need for international action to resolve the Kashmir dispute.
They highlighted the similarities between the Kashmir and Palestine conflicts and the importance of implementing UN resolutions to bring about lasting peace.
The event was held to mark the fifth anniversary of India’s revocation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The move was widely condemned by the international community, and the OIC has been actively engaged in efforts to resolve the dispute.
