In a surprising move, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Omar Ayub Khan has announced his resignation as Secretary-General of the party, citing a need to concentrate fully on his role as Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of Pakistan. Ayub Khan expressed gratitude to former Prime Minister Imran Khan for accepting his resignation, which was tendered on June 22, 2024.
Speaking on the development, Ayub Khan stated, “I am grateful to PM Imran Khan sahib for accepting my resignation as Secretary General PTI to focus on my role as Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of Pakistan.” He conveyed his decision via a letter addressed to imprisoned PTI founder Imran Khan and party Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan.
The announcement was conveyed to Imran Khan by Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Senator Shibli Faraz, during a meeting at Adyala Jail. Ayub Khan hinted at further organizational changes within PTI, under the guidance of the party founder.

“I want to thank all members of the PTI family, Parliamentarians, and Tanzeem Office Holders who have worked tirelessly and braved tremendous hardships for [ex] PM Imran Khan sahib and PTI,” Ayub Khan added.
This development comes amidst growing reports of discontent within PTI ranks, with sources indicating potential resignations from the National Assembly by PTI-backed 27 Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) lawmakers. The discontent primarily revolves around the leadership’s alleged failure to secure the release of Imran Khan from jail.
According to insider reports, 21 out of the 27 lawmakers discussed forming a forward bloc, emphasizing the urgency for PTI leadership to prioritize the release of incarcerated party figures rather than aspiring for higher positions.
The situation underscores ongoing tensions within PTI, prompting speculation about the party’s internal dynamics and future course of action.
