Pakistan Joins UN Security Council as Non-Permanent Member for two years

Pakistan’s Alternate Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to UN resolutions on Kashmir and its dedication to a peaceful and stable Afghanistan, underscoring the importance of regional peace.

Marking the start of Pakistan’s eighth term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (2025–2026), Ambassador Ahmad participated in a flag installation ceremony at the UN Headquarters in New York. Pakistan joined Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia as the newest non-permanent members of the 15-member body, replacing Japan, Ecuador, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland.

In his remarks, Ahmad emphasized Pakistan’s resolve to uphold the UN Charter’s principles, including maintaining international peace, promoting equality, and championing self-determination for oppressed peoples. He highlighted the need for cooperative multilateralism to address global challenges and stressed the importance of diplomacy and dialogue for conflict resolution.

“Pakistan will remain a strong voice for those under foreign occupation and oppression,” he stated, reiterating the country’s commitment to working with fellow Council members to pursue peaceful solutions to global conflicts.

Ahmad outlined Pakistan’s plan to actively engage in the Security Council’s initiatives, from conflict prevention and peacekeeping to peacebuilding. He also stressed the importance of upholding international law and ensuring the implementation of the Council’s decisions.

During Pakistan’s presidency of the Security Council in July, the country will influence the agenda-setting process and oversee deliberations on key global issues. Pakistan will also join the ISIS and Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee, enabling it to play a pivotal role in counterterrorism efforts.

The Security Council, comprising five permanent and ten non-permanent members, is tasked with maintaining international peace and security. It has the authority to issue legally binding resolutions, impose sanctions, and authorize military interventions.

Kazakhstan’s tradition of holding flag installation ceremonies, initiated in 2018, served as a platform for welcoming new members. Kazakhstan’s Permanent Representative, Kairat Umarov, lauded the incoming members for their potential contributions to addressing global crises, including conflicts, humanitarian challenges, and the impacts of climate change.

Speaking to a TV channel, Ahmad expressed optimism about Pakistan’s security and economic progress, while acknowledging recent challenges such as the resurgence of terrorism. He underscored Pakistan’s continued focus on achieving stability in Afghanistan, emphasizing its critical link to regional peace.

“It is a great honor to represent Pakistan,” he said, voicing confidence in the country’s ability to meet global expectations and strengthen its position on the international stage.
