PM Announces Bold Initiatives for Karachi Port Upgradation

Karachi: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during his recent visit to Karachi, has unveiled a series of ambitious measures aimed at transforming the Karachi Port into a modern hub of connectivity and efficiency. Chairing a high-level session attended by key federal and provincial officials, PM Shehbaz emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive upgrades across several critical areas.

Key Highlights:

  1. Infrastructure Overhaul: PM Shehbaz directed officials to enhance road and rail connectivity to the Karachi Port, ensuring seamless access for goods. This includes opening the Lyari Expressway 24/7 and linking the port to the Malir Expressway.
  2. Modernization Initiatives: Steps will be taken to reduce Customs clearance times through the installation of state-of-the-art machinery at the port.
  3. Rail Connectivity: The PM ordered the integration of the port with a robust rail network to optimize goods supply and transportation efficiency.
  4. Port Qasim Reforms: PM Shehbaz instructed the Port Qasim Authority to align charges for LNG cargo vessels with international standards, fostering competitiveness and trade growth.
  5. Regulation and Efficiency: A comprehensive strategy for regulating shipping lines and reducing expenditures at the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) was also mandated.
  6. Economic Growth Focus: PM Shehbaz reaffirmed the government’s commitment to facilitating the private sector, improving the business environment, and attracting investments to boost national exports.
  7. Geopolitical Significance: Highlighting Pakistan’s strategic location, PM Shehbaz underscored discussions with Central Asian leaders and the Russian president, emphasizing Pakistan’s role as a pivotal gateway for regional maritime trade.
  8. Vision for Economic Prosperity: The PM outlined a vision to modernize ports, potentially unlocking billions in export revenue through enhanced operational capabilities and value-addition industries.

The government aims to swiftly implement these directives, focusing on immediate infrastructure enhancements and regulatory reforms to propel Karachi Port’s transformation into a world-class maritime facility.
