Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday assured the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), a key ally in the ruling coalition, that their concerns regarding the controversial Cholistan Canal project and Kurram violence would be addressed.
The assurance was given during a meeting at the Prime Minister House between PM Shehbaz and a PPP delegation led by Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, according to a statement issued by the PPP.
Earlier in the day, President Asif Ali Zardari raised concerns about the recently approved Cholistan Canal System, which was sanctioned by the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) last month despite opposition from Sindh. Speaking at the joint session of parliament marking the start of the second parliamentary year, the president condemned the government’s “unilateral decision” to construct additional canals from the Indus River.
During an Iftar-dinner meeting, the PPP leaders expressed full confidence in PM Shehbaz’s leadership and the government’s policies. The premier, in turn, praised the PPP for actively representing the aspirations of the people across all four provinces and working closely with the federal government for the betterment of the country.

The meeting participants acknowledged the prime minister’s leadership and commended the government’s economic policies, which they said had contributed to recent financial stability in the country. They also appreciated the tireless efforts of PM Shehbaz and his team in achieving these results.
The PPP delegation reassured the prime minister of their full cooperation in efforts aimed at national development, economic stability, and improving the lives of ordinary citizens. They also expressed gratitude to PM Shehbaz for consulting coalition partners, valuing their opinions, and including them in significant decision-making processes.
The PPP reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the government under PM Shehbaz’s leadership in advancing Pakistan’s economic growth and ensuring national progress.
