In a crucial move aimed at ensuring uninterrupted gas and power supply during the holy month of Ramadan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed concerned authorities to focus on bolstering gas and power provisions to consumers. Chairing a high-level meeting on the petroleum sector, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of facilitating the private sector and local as well as foreign investors in the exploration, refining, and distribution of natural resources.
Attended by key cabinet members including Ishaq Dar and Dr. Musadik Malik, alongside other officials, the meeting underscored the government’s commitment to extending support to the private sector while safeguarding consumer rights, particularly for vulnerable segments of society.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stressed the need to tap into Pakistan’s vast maritime potential, urging exploration of undersea natural resources such as oil and gas reserves. With a focus on enhancing petroleum refining capacity and addressing circular debt issues, he emphasized the formulation of comprehensive strategies to optimize the utilization of resources and mitigate losses.
Expressing zero tolerance for wastage and inefficiencies, the Prime Minister instructed rigorous monitoring and crackdowns on gas and oil theft. Additionally, he emphasized the need for smart metering to reduce losses and ensure fair pricing in the LPG sector.
In a bid to promote energy efficiency, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for the installation of energy-efficient machinery in industries and encouraged domestic consumers to prioritize electricity over gas consumption. He also urged for the implementation of energy conservation measures and the enhancement of administrative infrastructure in line with international standards.
Recognizing the significance of Pakistan’s mineral resources, the Prime Minister instructed the formulation of strategies to boost exploration and enhance exports. Highlighting the depletion of oil and gas reserves, he emphasized the importance of local exploration to save foreign exchange and attract foreign investment.
The meeting also discussed ongoing efforts, including consultations for the LPG Policy 2024, and briefed participants on energy consumption patterns and the mineral sector’s potential.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated the government’s commitment to implementing gas and power supply reforms on a priority basis, underscoring the need for merit-based appointments and presenting comprehensive strategies for short, mid, and long-term reforms.
