PM seeks recommendations to provide relief to electricity consumers

Islamabad: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq has issued directives to the relevant authorities, calling for prompt and effective measures to address the escalating issue of electricity bills within the next 48 hours.

During an urgent meeting held at the Prime Minister’s House on Sunday, Prime Minister Haq received a detailed briefing on the notable surge in electricity bills for the month of July.

Emphasizing the need to avoid burdening the national treasury, the caretaker prime minister stressed the significance of implementing measures that ensure citizen relief and equitable access to vital services.

He also highlighted the importance of preventing a scenario where the general public faces hardships while officials benefit from complimentary electricity usage. In line with this, he called for transparency and directed relevant ministries and departments to furnish a comprehensive breakdown of individuals benefiting from free electricity.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Haq made a personal commitment to curtail electricity expenses in both the Prime Minister’s House and the Pakistan Secretariat.

Looking ahead, the prime minister revealed plans to initiate discussions with provincial chief ministers to collectively address the issue of excessive bills.

The Prime Minister’s Office also outlined its intention to collaborate closely with distribution companies to tackle electricity theft and minimize losses. This cooperative endeavor aims to streamline distribution processes and ensure optimal utilization of electricity resources.

In addition, the prime minister announced the initiation of comprehensive reforms within the electricity sector.

He stated, “These reforms will encompass short-term strategies as well as long-term plans, all aimed at enhancing the efficiency and accessibility of electricity services.”
