PM Shehbaz Meets US President Trump at White House

WASHINGTON: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a rare and high-profile meeting with United States President Donald Trump at the White House, signaling a significant thaw in bilateral relations. The meeting, which lasted for more than an hour, was also attended by Field Marshal Asim Munir, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance.

Ahead of the talks, President Trump described PM Shehbaz and Field Marshal Munir as “great” people, setting a positive tone for discussions. Images released from the White House showed the leaders engaged in cordial exchanges, reflecting a renewed warmth in ties between the two nations.

Relations between Washington and Islamabad have strengthened in recent months under Trump, reversing years of US focus on India as a counterweight to China in Asia. Analysts say the latest engagement underscores Pakistan’s rising profile not only in South Asia but also in the Middle East.

Strategic Shift in Regional Balance

Democratic leader Shahid Khan called the meeting “highly significant,” saying it had elevated Pakistan-US ties to an entirely new level. He argued that Pakistan had cemented its importance in Southeast Asia while carving out a meaningful role in the Middle East, partly due to India’s strategic missteps and Islamabad’s balanced positions on Iran and Palestine.

Khan further noted that Pakistan’s four-day war with India earlier this year demonstrated its considerable military strength, undermining India’s long-claimed status as the region’s “security guardian” and elevating Pakistan as a decisive regional power.

Economic Prospects and Energy Cooperation

In what observers described as a watershed moment, President Trump announced plans to encourage American companies to invest in Pakistan’s energy sector, including oil exploration projects. Political commentator Cheema hailed the development as a potential boost for Pakistan’s struggling economy, emphasizing that US investment could accelerate growth and create jobs.

Pakistan’s Role in Regional Diplomacy

Journalist Faiz Rehman, speaking to Geo News, stressed that Pakistan’s deep-rooted cultural, civilizational, and trade ties with Iran position it uniquely to foster dialogue with its neighbor. He described Islamabad’s outreach to Tehran as building “bridges of trust” that could help stabilize the wider region.

Rehman also noted that Trump, a businessman by background, views Pakistan as a partner capable of delivering results across diplomacy, geopolitics, and defense. “His warmth toward Pakistan is not without calculation,” Rehman said, pointing out that the US president appears to see Islamabad as a pivotal ally in reshaping the regional balance.

A New Chapter

The White House meeting is being seen as the beginning of a new chapter in Pakistan-US relations, with both sides aligning on shared interests in security, economic cooperation, and regional diplomacy. Analysts believe the renewed partnership could have far-reaching implications for South Asia’s future.
