Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to participate in the high-level segment of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, scheduled from September 23 to September 27, 2024. He will be accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, along with senior government officials, as announced by Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch during her weekly press briefing on Thursday.
During his address at the UNGA, PM Shehbaz Sharif will reaffirm Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to multilateralism and express strong support for the United Nations’ efforts in fostering global peace, security, and prosperity. He will also highlight key international issues, including the long-standing questions of Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir, which remain critical items on the UN Security Council’s agenda.
In addition to delivering his speech, the prime minister will attend several high-profile meetings on the sidelines of the UNGA, including discussions on existential threats posed by rising sea levels and the UN Security Council’s open debate on leadership for peace.

PM Sharif’s itinerary also includes bilateral meetings with various world leaders, sessions with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and engagements with the President of the UNGA, Philemon Yang. The prime minister will also interact with the Pakistani diaspora during his visit.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar will be actively involved in a series of high-level events, including the Summit of the Future, hosted by the UN Secretary-General from September 22 to 23. Dar will also attend key ministerial meetings, such as the OIC Annual Coordination Meeting of Foreign Ministers, the OIC Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir, the Ministerial Meeting of G77 and China, and the Non-Aligned Movement’s ministerial-level session.
The Foreign Office spokesperson highlighted that Pakistan’s participation in the UNGA will serve as a platform for the country to voice its stance on pressing global issues, emphasizing its commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and the promotion of international peace and security.
The UNGA, the primary policymaking body of the United Nations, serves as a forum for multilateral discussions on pressing global issues. It convenes annually from September to December and at other times as necessary, allowing member states to propose and vote on resolutions related to the world’s most critical challenges.
