LAHORE: Anti-corruption officials arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf President Parvez Elahi from outside Zahoor Elahi Palace in Gulberg area of the provincial capital on Thursday.
Elahi is facing a Rs70 million corruption case related to alleged embezzlement of development funds allocated for Gujrat district.
An anti-corruption court last week had discarded the former Punjab chief minister’s interim bail over his failure to appear before the court citing health issues. His medical certificate was also declared bogus by the court.
Amir Mir, Punjab’s caretaker information minister, confirmed Elahi’s arrest, saying that the PTI leader would be shifted to anti-corruption headquarters.
Mir said that the area around Elahi’s residence was cordoned off for the past couple of days to take him into custody. He informed that at first the former CM resisted but when the police personnel tried to break the glass of his car’s window, he came out. “He will be treated as other accused are treated,” the provincial information minister said.
