Robin Fraser has been named the new manager of Toronto FC, the Major League Soccer (MLS) club announced on Friday, following the resignation of former head coach John Herdman amidst the Canada Soccer drone scandal.
Fraser, who previously served as an assistant coach with Toronto FC and has an extensive background in the league as a defender, most recently managed the Colorado Rapids. He is contracted with Toronto FC through the 2027 MLS season.
“Robin has one of the most accomplished careers in MLS, combining a multitude of experience as both a player and coach,” said Toronto FC General Manager Jason Hernandez in a statement. “As a person, he exemplifies our club values to the highest degree, and as a manager, we are confident in his ability to achieve sporting success.”
Herdman resigned in November following the drone scandal that emerged during the Paris Olympics. The controversy led to the dismissal of Bev Priestman as Canada’s women’s head coach. New Zealand officials had complained that Canadian staff flew drones over their training sessions ahead of their opening match in Paris.
Herdman, who had previously coached both the men’s and women’s national teams, did not provide a reason for his resignation. However, an independent review revealed that Canada Soccer had “initiated a proceeding” concerning Herdman’s actions.
