ISLAMABAD: Newly-elected speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq took oath on Friday. Outgoing speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf administered the oath.
Earlier in the day, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq emerged victorious in the election for the speaker. He defeated the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed Malik Aamir Dogar, who secured 91 out of the total 291 votes. One vote was rejected, the official news agency reported.
Sardar Ayaz Sadiq was the joint candidate of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P).
Prominent political figures present during the proceedings included PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and President Shehbaz Sharif, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians President Asif Ali Zardari, PTI leaders Omar Ayub and Asad Qaiser, Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui.
