Saudi FM meets Syrian president on first trip to Damascus since war

Damascus: Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, which is an important step towards ending Syria’s secession from the Arab countries.

According to Reuters, this is the first visit of a top diplomat from Saudi Arabia to Syria after the long civil war in Syria cut ties with the rest of the Arab countries.

Saudi official media said that the meeting discussed the steps needed for a political solution to the Syrian conflict, which would guarantee Syria’s Arab identity.

On the other hand, according to the official Syrian news agency, Bashar al-Assad said that the region has benefited from the free and realistic policies of Saudi Arabia.

However, the statements of the two leaders did not mention the Arab League summit, which will be hosted by Riyadh next month. Although the Gulf Arab foreign ministers, the counterparts of Egypt, Iraq and Jordan discussed the possible return of Syria at the Arab League meeting, but no agreement has been reached so far.
