Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Umar on Thursday was granted interim bail in the Section 144 violation case registered against him for holding a rally on August 20 in the federal capital.
Umar along with party chief Imran Khan appeared before the court earlier today hours after PTI senior leader and lawyer Babar Awan filed the bail application in an additional sessions court.
In the application, Awan mentioned that Umar is ready to be a part of the police investigation and contended the petitioner was present in a Lahore rally at the time when protest rallies were being held in different parts of the country.
Additional Sessions Judge Zafar Abbas presided over the case and granted the PTI secretary general bail in lieu of a surety bond of Rs5,000.
It is pertinent to note here that six PTI members were granted interim bail a day earlier by the additional sessions court in the Section 144 violation case registered against them.
They maintained that the provisions the leaders were charged under were bailable and pleaded that bail be granted.
Additional Sessions Court Judge Faizan Haider Gilani granted interim bail, against surety bonds of Rs20,000, to the PTI leaders after they approached the court on Wednesday.
The leaders who were granted bail included: Saifullah Niazi, Ali Awan, Raja Khurram, Faisal Javed, Sadaqat Abbasi and Shahzad Waseem.
The members of the former ruling party had filed bail applications after a case was registered against them and 19 other PTI leaders in the Aabpara police station.
The party leaders had participated in a rally held to protest PTI leader Shahbaz Gill’s arrest and ‘custodial torture’.
According to the PTI leaders’ lawyers, the case against them was “baseless”, adding that the rally was peaceful and the cases were an “attempt to suppress” the leaders.
