Rawalpindi: In a significant counterterrorism operation, security forces killed at least 30 terrorists in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s (KP) South Waziristan district, the military’s media wing announced on Tuesday.

According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the operation took place on February 17, 2025, in the general area of Sararogha, South Waziristan, following intelligence reports about the presence of militants.

“During the conduct of the operation, security forces effectively engaged the terrorists’ location, resulting in the elimination of 30 militants,” the ISPR statement read.

A sanitization operation is underway to ensure that no additional militants remain in the area, the ISPR added, reaffirming the security forces’ commitment to eradicating terrorism from the country.

The latest operation comes just days after four Pakistan Army soldiers embraced martyrdom while neutralizing six terrorists in North Waziristan. The ISPR previously reported that security forces conducted an operation in Miran Shah, North Waziristan District, eliminating six terrorists.

During intense fire exchange, Lieutenant Muhammad Hassaan Arshaf, a resident of Lahore, led his troops bravely and was martyred along with three soldiers: Naib Subedar Muhammad Bilal, Sepoy Farhat Ullah, and Sepoy Himat Khan.

Rising Security Concerns in Pakistan

Pakistan has faced a surge in terrorist attacks, particularly in KP and Balochistan, following the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021. Law enforcement agencies and security forces have been the primary targets of these attacks.

According to data released by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), terror incidents spiked by 42% in January 2025 compared to the previous month. The report documented 74 militant attacks nationwide, resulting in 91 fatalities, including 35 security personnel, 20 civilians, and 36 militants. Another 117 individuals sustained injuries, comprising 53 security forces personnel, 54 civilians, and 10 militants.

KP has remained the worst-affected province, followed by Balochistan. The province’s settled districts witnessed 27 militant attacks, leading to 19 deaths, including 11 security personnel, six civilians, and two militants. In the former tribal districts of KP, 19 attacks resulted in 46 fatalities, including 13 security personnel, eight civilians, and 25 militants.

The recent counterterrorism operations highlight the security forces’ resolve to combat militant activities and restore peace in the region.
