Security Forces Foil Terrorist Attack on Bannu Cantt

Security forces successfully thwarted a major terrorist assault on Bannu Cantonment, killing at least six attackers on Tuesday, according to security sources.

The militants, identified as affiliates of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), attempted to breach the compound by driving two explosive-laden cars into its perimeter. Despite facing intense resistance, the attackers detonated the explosives, triggering massive blasts.

Security personnel stationed at various entry points neutralized six terrorists and apprehended additional suspects. However, the explosions caused significant damage, including to a nearby mosque and the collapse of a house’s roof.

According to a spokesperson for the District Headquarter Hospital (DHQ), at least 15 civilians, including four children and two women, were killed in the blasts. Additionally, 25 others were injured.

This attack follows a recent suicide bombing at a religious school in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa that killed six people, including key Taliban leaders. Similar attacks have escalated in Pakistan since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in August 2021.

In July 2024, the Hafiz Gul Bahadur group launched a similar attack on the Bannu Cantonment, resulting in the deaths of eight Pakistan Army soldiers. A retaliatory operation killed 10 terrorists.

Last year marked the deadliest period for Pakistan in over a decade, with over 1,600 fatalities from a surge in militant attacks. Islamabad continues to accuse the Taliban government in Kabul of harboring militants launching attacks from Afghan soil, though the Taliban denies these allegations.
